I had a situation recently where I had to 👏🏻 advocate👏🏻 for👏🏻 myself 👏🏻 And it meant literally the difference of whether tens of thousands would enter my bank or leave it.
Now, the gracious part of this is that I have people I can go to for wisdom and encouragement and prayer. And as someone who wasn’t always aware of how to ask for help, that in and of itself was a huge blessing through all of this.
I had access to their practical advice, truly helpful suggestions, and keen business savvy – but at the end of the day, I had to be the one to advocate for myself.
😅 I was the one having the (mannnnny) conversations.
😅 I was the one standing up for what was right.
😅 I was the one needing to pull together the facts and documentation and phone records and notes.
😅 I was the one calling back to stand my ground.
😅 I was the one giving it to God time after time when I kept doing all I could on my side, but it needed a miracle.
I had my friends’ support, but it was ultimately up to me to create, maintain, and build momentum towards the desired outcome.
🙄 Exhausting at times? Absolutely.
🙄 Uncomfortable at times? Yes. All of the time, as a matter of fact.
🙄 Frustrating? Enough to make me want to curse 🤬 which is not something you’d normally find me doing.
😃 Worth it? A hundred times over – and I’m not just talking financially, although that’s a welcome addition 😉
It’s worth it for the
➕ the confidence you’ll build
➕ fortitude you’ll gain
➕ the results you’ll get
➕ the person you’ll become along the way
Now, you need not concern yourself that I’m embroiled in some under-the-radar legal battle or anything so dramatic. Although if they gave honorary law degrees, I feel close to being entitled to one after all this 🤪
The takeaway is this: sometimes you are the only one who can advocate for yourself and IT IS WORTH DOING!!
😑 The late nights.
😑 The long hours.
😑 The seeming-to-go-nowhere conversations.
😑 The locating and documenting the facts of what happened, when, and who was involved.
😑 The humility of bringing a vulnerable topic to wise people.
IT IS WORTH DOING.
Advocate for yourself.
✔️ Is your doctor pushing drugs or claiming all your tests are normal, but you know there’s something deeper going on?
✔️ Is your child’s teacher pressuring you to make a decision for them that you know ultimately isn’t in their best interest?
✔️ Is work trying to edge you into doing something that doesn’t line up with your values?
There are a bazillion examples of where you might find an opportunity to advocate for yourself (or for your child) and I’m going to encourage you to do it!
Seek wise counsel and advocate for yourself 💯
