You can tell them exactly where you want to go (i.e. having clear goals) and they will still lead you astray – having you look in every direction but forward!
They are frustrating, demeaning, confusing, misleading, and ignorant.
Speaking from personal experience, having your excuses take charge lands you in a world of hurt.
You’ll find yourself discouraged, off-track, and questioning whether the goals you set are even worth it, whether they’re “realistic,” and whether you have what it takes to reach them.
Spoiler alert: they ARE worth it, “realistic” isn’t a worthwhile gauge, and you definitely have what it takes (or you have access to learn what you need to get there)!
One of the most common deterrents I faced (and that I heard a lot when I was a Goal Setting Coach) is: “I just don’t know how to get there!”
I tricked myself into thinking that “if I just had all the steps laid out then I could do this.” but really what I was struggling with was believing that I could take it all the way across the finish line.
Confidence is built through action.
Of the literal HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of “Standard Operating Procedures” (aka “SOPs”) that I’ve constructed through the years, every single one of them was built upon action.
There were some that I already knew how to do, so I could simply write them out (so other people could be equipped to do that thing). But the majority of them were built while I was doing a first pass at said project.
And the projects I felt most intimidated by and most resistant to were the ones I was the most unfamiliar with. It wasn’t until I got my hands dirty and started really DOING the project that the clarity came, and the accomplishments started building on each other.
START. Start moving. Start going. Start ignoring your excuses. Start building and believing and living!
